By "backlog" I refer to a list of tasks or todos that we set aside for "later". Work that could be done but isn't planned or prioritized.
I dislike backlogs. The gnawing feeling of "wait, there's more...".
What happens if we delete this list? If we let go of control and stop clinging to our thoughts? What if we become comfortable with the uncomfortable idea that today's plans won't matter tomorrow – trusting instead that we’ll make the right decisions when the time comes?
When we lead by value, we eliminate the need for a backlog. We align the team, ensuring everyone understands the vision and purpose. Then the need to hold on to details disappears.
Overly complex task or project management often signals mistrust, in the team’s shared path and our future selves, or the alignment with values. When a leader holds a secret agenda, then they can't lead by value and instead need to micromanage.
This isn't to say that lists of challenges and ideas have no value. Creating those documents, discussing them and even the act of writing something down to free the mind is a core piece to create alignment.
But don't romanticize it. Most documents have served their purpose upon creation, some after being presented and only few for ongoing documentation.
Burn the rest. Or archive it. Or feed a LLM with it. In any way don't let it diminish your energy and brilliance.
